Fruit of the Spirit vs Gifts of the Spirit 12/Oct/09

The Cross will be our boast, when we have a revelation of what Christ has done on the Cross. Deeper life comes from deeper understanding. The amazing gift of salvation was given 2000 years ago and yet many have not received this gift which is so freely available for all.

Calling upon His name comes from a desperate heart (Rom 10:13). As we choose to live for Him, we will find that everything is given unto us for godliness and to lead a life pleasing to God.

As we follow the Lord holding on to the resources, we will rise above difficulties and become fruitful vessels in the hand of the Lord.

¨ No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. Each tree is recognized by its own fruit. People do not pick figs from thornbushes, or grapes from briers. The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks¨ (Luke6:43-45)

The fruit comes from the seed and the fruit depends on the seed. When we accept Christ Jesus, we become children of God, born of the seed of God (1John3:9). If we are born of the seed of God, all nine aspects of the fruit must be seen in our life. It is not the fruit of a Christian but the fruit of the Spirit seen in a Christian. We dont bear fruit, He bears. Its the work of the Spirit of God.

For us to manifest the fruit of the Spirit, we should abide in Him. To ¨abide¨ means to remain, to stick to, to follow....therefore we are to remain in Him, to stick to Him and to follow Him; and as we continue to abide in Him, we will be spectators of what God does through us. Every aspect of the fruit of the Spirit will manifest through our lives.

The fruit of the Spirit is Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness and Self-Control. The Holy Spirit bears the fruit in us by enabling us to do what we need to do. His manifestations in and through us is recognised through nine kinds of manifestations which are popularly known as ´the gifts of the Spirit´ (1Cor 12:7-10). Christians tend to disassociate these gifts from the fruit forgetting the fact that the gifts enable the fruit to be manifested.

How do the gifts help the fruit to be manifested? The nine qualities of the fruit can be classified into three categories

a) Peace and Joy

b) Love, Kindness, Goodness, Gentleness

c) Faith, Patience and Self-control.

For always manifesting Peace and Joy we always need to obey God. It is by Faith we obey (Rom1:5) and this faith is a gift of the Holy Spirit (1Cor 12:9).

Love, Kindness, Goodness and Gentleness result from knowing Him more and more (John 17:26) and to know Him more and more we need to know His voice which is a result of receiving the gift of Discerning of the spirits (1Cor 12:10).

Faith, Patience and Self-control are worked out by the Holy-Spirit in our lives by allowing us to face difficult people and difficult circumstances (Rom5:3). To face difficulties we need Wisdom and this is another gift of the Spirit (1Cor12:8).

Hence when we have these three gifts of the Spirit, the fruit of the Spirit will be seen in us over a period of time as we exercise this walk with the Spirit. There is therefore a direct relationship between the gifts and the fruit of the Holy Spirit.
